Loneliness is one of the saddest emotions that we experience as humans. It often leads to despair, depression, and unhappiness. It leaves us with a hole in our heart and, often, leads to thoughts of suicide.
This feeling of being “alone” affects many aspects of our daily lives. We begin to feel the need to withdraw from most forms of communication. We overeat and gain weight. We use sleep as an escape mechanism. Each of these tendencies pushes us further and further away from others, only increasing our innermost feeling of isolation. Our attitude quickly becomes one of “poor old me”. We reason that no one cares or understands us. In our minds, we are beyond help. Our loneliness, all the meanwhile, only intensifies.
However, there is an answer to this feeling of loneliness! Do not despair!
The Bible says in Deuteronomy 31:8,”It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
Amazing! Not only does God reside with those, who have put their trust and faith in Him, but God even goes before them and paves their ways. God cares for those that call on Him. God has promised to never forsake His children. NEVER again must one of His sons or daughters face anything ALONE! What an awesome God we serve!
What does this mean for us, as believers? It means that our depression and despair should vanish, as we find comfort in the fact that the God of the universe cares about each and every one of His children. God and God alone, can remove the feeling of loneliness and replace it with a feeling of joy and fulfillment. Only the love of Christ, God's only begotten son, can fill the empty void that has been causing us so much misery and pain. There is NO substitute for the love of Jesus. This love is abundant and overflows our hearts, giving us new purpose in life.
Can this empty feeling of loneliness return? Yes, and in such times we are called to faithfully come before the Lord and seek His presence. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound, in hope.”
This act of “being filled” leaves no room for loneliness or despair. We will be filled to the brim and the empty hole is GONE!
